Gunung Api Volcano

Gunung-Api

A nice shot of Gunung Api volcano which takes up its own whole island. Behind the volcano is the main (little) island of Banda, with the main town, port and airport of the Banda Islands.

Lava flows have blackened the sides of the volcano and partially blocked the shipping channel. It often rumbles in anger, shaking the buildings of the town. There are even the ruins of an old Dutch fort on Gunung Api. Imagine that, posted to a fort under a volcano!

In the foreground is the village of Lonthor, across the channel from Banda on the largest island of the group, Banda Besar. The photo is taken from the earthquake shattered ruins of Fort Hollandia; another Dutch fort built to control the islands and their priceless nutmeg trees. Hollandia’s main battle was not with invaders, but earthquakes, and it was smashed by one in 1748 and abandoned.
