Fort Duurstede-Battlements Saparua

Duurstede-battlements

Built by the Dutch VOC (East India Company) on Saparua Island, near Ambon, in 1691 to guard the clove plantations, Fort Duurstede was a small fort holding a dozen men. Its unusual layout was a function of the small peninsula it is located on, and it still commands the anchorage to the main town on the island.

Nothing much ever happened there until 1817 when local independence fighter Pattimura and supporters stormed the fort in 1817, putting the small Dutch garrison to the sword. Hopes for a wider rebellion against the Dutch failed to materialise, and they retook the fort six months later, eventually capturing the rebel.

Pattimura was hanged in Fort Victoria at Ambon, but is still highly regarded by the Indonesians as a freedom fighter. The airport and university at Ambon are named after him, and he appeared on the old 1000 rupiah note, which today is worth about six cents.
